The Power of Bringing It Up

for Ian and the Animals

The phone rang, and I sang
requesting an answer of caring,
“give me some credit,
put me in your heart and head,
could you show me some respect?”

The person on the other end
texted back judgment,
“you’re just all needy,”
and then more sentences
that entice monster-size fences

I just want to mend this
make us manifest the best
of what we express.

If I spoke with an animal hater,
someone stomping on cats
it’s all howling and spraying
mean “peeps” plotting attacks
instead of how cats make us relax

Would he turn his anger around
let us feel comforting sounds
like a whisper of a purrrrr
Cats can create friendships for sure
cuddling love as the conquerer.

I just want to mend this
make us manifest the best
of what we express.

To be deliberately
against progressing
stops life from being good
Do we shame more than we should?
Criticize not exhort?

Lift me up,
so what I screw up when I speak up,
but look at what I’ve brought up
I’m just hoping you wake up.
don’t bring it down.
